I just purchased a 60 year old home as a fixer-upper. The house had carpet over the original wood floor which preserved it. The wood floors are almost perfect. Literally no scratches were found, just the slight look of age. I don't know my next step. Should I do a quick, light sanding or should I try and clean the floors for the varnish?

Was there a pad under the carpet, and was it stapled to the floor? Lots of nice hardwood was carpeted over years ago and the pad was put in with about a zillion staples. Quite often, the hardwood is in excellent shape, but needs to be refinished to hide all the staple holes.

If you don't have the staples, count your blessings. A light sanding and a couple of coats of polyurethane should make the harwood look like new.
