Here's my situation.

I recently sold my house and the buyer's inspector informed me that the insulation in my attic is deemed unsafe. What is up there are small squares (around 1" x 1") of styrofoam -- we're talking a BUNCH of these.

Anyway, the inspector said that these would become toxic if the temperature became too hot in there.

Two things -- when we moved into the house 6 years ago, OUR inspector didn't say anything about this being a problem. Second, we agreed to get the foam squares out of the attic to comply with their wishes.

The only reason we agreed is b/c we were under the assumption that it IS toxic and our inspection would not "pass" unless it was out of there.

QUESTION: Is this stuff really toxic, and is it necessary to get it out of there?

Again, there is a TON of this stuff up there, and some of it is mixed into a blow-in type insulation. I'm tempted to tell the buyers that IF we DO get the squares out of there, they aren't going to have any insulation left!!

Thanks for any advice!

I have never heard of them being toxic from just heat. But very toxic in a fire for sure. You could check code there for where you are. As a insulation I dont think it was any good cut up that way.Ill bet it just came out of some shipping boxes and could be styrofoam or more like a polystyrene. Check code for sure ED;)
