We have a room that has old red oak hardwood floors along with some areas that we patched with new red oak hardwood. Neither the new or old has ever been finished (a carpet and built-ins were over it for years prior to our purchase). We want to sand and finish the floors.

In the rest of the house, we've redone the old pine floors by sanding, staining, and using a polyurethane finish. My question is that I've recently seen on several BBC America shows where a paste wax is used instead of polyurethane. The floors look great and I think it would be in keeping with the character of our house (log and post/beam). Does anyone know what this wax paste is? Do you have experience with it? Someone had recommended Butcher's Wax but I've used that on furniture and it gives quite a slippery finish which would not be good for floors (except bowling alleys!). Thanks in advance for any advice.
