Ok, I goofed...... I pulled up the vinyl sheeting, and there was black mastic underneath. I used gasoline to get the mastic off - worked great....However, I have gasoline fume problems. It's been one day, and the fumes are less. The bathroom is 4x4.5, with no windows.I think the floor was sealed, but it's hard to tell - any way to remove the smell, besides lots of circulating air?

Open the nearest window and to get rid of the fumes. Be careful of flipping on electric switches, etc. around gas fumes.
Why did you remove the vinyl flooring?
You can put cement board directly over it to apply thinset and tile to.

I was told that if the vinyl did not havea good seal, I had to remove it. The vinyl was easily removable. The one thing I am concerned about is what I now need to do to prepare the floor for ceramic tile...

I'm no ceramic tile expert, but all that you have to do is screw down 1/4" cement board.

Never, ever, ever use gasoline for anthing but running engines. You are so lucky you did not blow your house up.

Ok, I know what I did was stupid....but with fans and a lot of water, the house is smell free..... do I really need to put the cement board down? The floor is 98% glue free, and I was figuring that the thinset would level out the small irregularities at this point. I was planning on using a level to make sure....
