I share one common staircase wall with the nextdoor townhouse condo, built in the mid-1970's. The new neighbors ripped up their stair carpeting and the noise is driving me nuts. Yesterday I bought Regal cellulose insulation and rented a "Preditor" machine from Home Depot. It was a total disaster--the hose clogged 8 times.
What other DIY options do I have or, is it time to call in the professionals?
Thanks very much.

Sounds like call the big boys in. From what you say and that bad could be you will have to like redo the wall. to kill the noise. ED;)

So....we're looking at ripping off the old drywall, installing new insulation (maybe sound board) and putting up new drywall. Any ballpark on what I can expect per square foot?

Cant say a cost for where you are its different all over. But how bad is this or what. A true sound wall most of the time is built like this. Think a 2x6 bottom and top plate. Then 2X4 as the studs16" center face to one side of the wall and the other side of the wall its 16" studs face the other side. That would put thim about 8" apart. Then you put the insulation between them
Or could you offer to buy them a new rug ?????????????
ED;)

The noise/vibration is pretty bad. It rattles the pictures--had to get those little plastic dots. Think stomping elephants. How can I say this...they're young, full of energy and rather.....large.
Hey, what a great idea on the rug--I'll try it (and those big boys).
Thanks, Ed, for being the voice of reason and compromise.
