I had a glass backsplash in my last house which had holes in the corners and then was screwed to the wall the the screws topped with decorative covers. I want to use mirror this time. Is there any reason to suppose that I cannot attach mirror in the same way as the glass sheet was attached? If it can be done then the glass shop would drill the holes.
Thanks. Anne

Hello: Anne

Personally speaking, we had our new mirrors attached to the walls using a special adhesive. The work was done by the local glass and mirror shop.

The above is offered for several reasons.

At first I had doubts the method would work. Adhesive glue on walls to hold such heavy objects, I asked the pros.

Their reply was yes. The old method is obsolete.

The walls are painted and sheetrock. I expected them to fall off...LOL!

Much to our surprise, 5 years now and they still remain firmly attached. How that is accomplished is amazing. Even through earthquakes, they remain intact and stay put.

Never dawned on me to ask how to remove them when the next painting is needed. Oh Well. I'll ask that question when the time arrives....haha.

Suggestion:
Have your mirrors attached professionally and in the same manner. The method works well, looks great (nothing unsightly) based on our personal experiences thus far, we are satisfied.

The actual weight of the mirror is supported by the counter top. The mastic simply keeps them from falling forward and will last a life time. Why would you want to remove the mirrors for painting?

As I had glass attached by screws, why would I want to use mastic to glue up mirrors and thus mess up the wall if I did not have to? Just because that is the way it is done? What about having holes in the corners of the mirrors. No one has answered that question yet. Guess I will ask the glass store. Thanks.

I'm in the glass & mirror business and yes you can use screws covered by rosettes or baguettes. The reason we don't use them anymore is that it gives the mirror a cleaner look.

I guess my first question is the glass you have now is it tempered? Adding holes to any un-tempered glass has a tendency to weaken it. If you use mastic the integrity of the mirror will not be compromised, cleaner look, and a unobstructed surface makes it easer to clean. However I guess it would really apply to your personal preference it can be done either way. Good Luck...:D

Mirror cannot be tempered since you will end up with a distorted image. It is safe to drill holes in annealed glass or mirror as long as the screws are tightened properly.
