I am getting ready to redecorate a bedroom, approximately 12x17. Windows on east and south walls, east window being very small and up high on one end. South window is 36x60 and centered on the wall. North wall has bifold closet doors, west wall is an interior wall with the door to the room at the north end. Approximately 3x4 sink and vanity area on north end, leading into a half bath. Guess you could say the room is a 12x14 rectangle with a half bath on the southeast corner. East wall is a long unbroken wall (17 ft) except for the small window, and is the problem wall.
Plan is as follows- paper west and north walls with a patterned paper. Girlfriend helper and consultant says paper east and south walls, too. To me, this is a LOT of paper to live with. My suggestion is on the east and south walls, bring a matching solid paper up about 3 feet from the floor, cap with a decorative wood molding and leave the top 5 feet of the wall drywall that I can paint to bring in another color or matching color.
Girlfriend is having a fit...says NEVER have paint and paper on the same wall. I can see this in my head, looks fine to me...
Suggestions or comments ? HELP !!!

This is a decorating question, personal preference should dictate how you want it to look.
You can tell the girlfriend/helper/consultant that we combine paper and paint in single rooms all the time to provide focal points and or accents. And also for the reason you stated, so as not to 'close up' or 'crowd' the room.
Good luck convincing her.

the rule of thumb is "don't do anything in halves". so don't paper 2 walls, and paint 2 walls. you could paper 1 wall, and paint the other 3, or paper 3 walls and paint 1. or you could just paper the bottom 3 feet of all the walls (like wainscotting) and paint above the paper (use a border or wooden chair rail to separate the two).
but absolutely, DO NOT paper 2 walls and then chop up the other 2 walls with paint AND a DIFFERENT paper (or even the same paper, for that matter!) that would be far busier than simply papering everything!
