Hi lynnc
Acid foods such as Tomatos & pickles will last longer than Corn or beans that are low acid. Tempatures cool is better.
If you removed the band & give the lid a wipe with a silicone rag like they sell at Wal-Mart for whiping guns & knives to prevent rust, that will prevent rust holes.
I read once that if you bought survival foods, you should eat them up with in 3 years. I agree on some of that, then again I have eaten 5 year old canned tomatos & lived :).
Food loses it's quality the longer it is stored so try to eat it up in 2 years if possable & look for signs of discoloration or cans or jars that don't make the sucking sound when opened.
It should make all of us wonder why more people get sick from store bought canned food, than home canned food each year. I believe it's all about the quality or lack of, the food that is canned. DIY canned food just taste better & probably is better for you than store bought. :)
