Is blown in insulation better than insulation that comes in rolls? If so how much better?

Batts are easier if you're not too experienced with blowing in fiberglass or cellulose insulation. Operation of the rental equipment can be tricky and it is my understanding that, if you rent a machine to blow in cellulose insulation, there is no water spray, which is essential in activating the glue which "holds" it together and keeps it from settling. However, for better coverage, blown in IS better in that it fills in around any obstacles such as outlets, etc..

Should you decide to go with blown, cellulose (basically, shredded newspaper) is the way to go, in my opinion. Most manufacturers guarantee no settling, it contains boric acid which keeps down the bug population in it, it is flame retardant (I've melted many pennies on top of it....), and it doesn't itch. Additionally, it only takes 8.5 inches of cellulose to obtain an R-30 as opposed to 12 inches of fiberglass.....

Hope this helps......
