We have a noisy water heater (~ 8 yrs. old) in our laundry room that periodically makes popping noises (sounds like the inner walls are being dinged from the inside). What does this mean? It was last drained when we moved into the house 4 years ago.

Draining will leave sediment on the bottom of the tank. As the burner is heating the water, the sediment reisists the heat transfer and boils, causing the noise.
To help resolve the problem, tank flushing is needed. Flushing is not the same as draining. Flushing will remove the loosened sediment and flush it out of the tank.
The topic water heater draining and flushing at the top of the forum explains the procedure to "flush" a tank. Follow those instructions and the problem should be solved.
