Would vinyl board be suitable for relining shower?

Is it waterproof?

Would be easier to cover the existing waterproof drywall with the board and I think a nicer appearance.

The existing sealing metal is totally shot . Does anyone know the name of the sealer I am speaking of? It is a metal type strip that runs down all seams.

Sorry for the dumb questions but I am just learning in my old age! lol!

I would also like to use the board on the wall behind the 2 new bathroom cabinets. Is there a way to mount it to the wall aside from nails for a nice finish?

Thanks Robert

What is "vinyl board"? I think you would be best served by using a tub surround kit.

The surround kits are nice, but if you're wanting to go even cheaper get the vinyl board, it's called bath panel also, same stuff as in the kits, and is installed the same with the proper type of liquid nails, round here it runs like $20-$25 per 4'x8' sheet. There's all types of vinyl trim available as well for edges & corners.

Yes indeedy!
Went to home depot and did exactly like you said!

The vinyl board (Plain White here is 13.00 a sheet. The fancy "look pretty" stuff is 21.50 a sheet.

Liquid nails 14.00 a gal.

I looked at the surround kits they had and believe this will look better and is certainly a lot less expensive.Their surround units started at 98.00 and went up to the sky!. Just everyday folk here. Nobody to impress but ourselves and the pride in DIY!

Thanks Robert

With this solid surface material purchased from a local DIY'er supplier, in regards to built in shower presently composed of crumbling tile and joints, with a flimsy/leaky cheap shower pan.

1) How thick is it ?
2) Do you use epoxy to join edges together ?
3) Is it sandable ? i.e. by shower door, so no sharp edges are
present.
4) Could a piece of this be cut to a Neo-Angle form to make up a
shower pan ?

Thanx in advance.

Hi ,

One wall of waterproof drywall was in bad shape in my project.
I replaced that wall 6.50. Vinyl board is very thin and it is not recommended to nail it as the warrenty is voided. Solid surface is necessary to adhere to. Shower pan was ok, I used 3 of the 10.00 vinyl board =30.00. A tub of liquid mails = 15.00. I would assume you could use this product as a tub and caulk it and also use the vinyl trim to finish it off. Gloss finish so no need to sand.

My finished product is a 150 percent improvement and certainly makes the room look like new.

Not an expert here and learning by this project so perhaps someone with more knowledge could answer the tub issue! Good luck!

Robert - Sounds like the project went very well. Any chance of some pics of the finished product, or better yet, a before & after shot.

budnlori,

You going to need to tear out the crumbling tile & grout. Sounds like this was very poorly done, any idea what's under the tile? From your description, I'd wager it's greenboard, not good! My recommendation would probably be to tear it out to the studs & start over. Post back with some more info on your situation & include a link to some pictures if possible, I'm sure you can get it fixed up without having to take out a second on the house. ;)

PS- Might be a good idea to start a fresh thread when you repost , helps keep things focused.
