View Full Version : Do I buy metric or SAE tools?

Hi, I am new at this and looking to get some simple hand tools. I notice many (wrenches & drills) come in metric and american measurements. What should I be using?

Thanks.

Sandra:

For around the house - SAE
Nowadays on your auto - Metric

I have multiple sets of both, but I make my living with my tools.

Sandra -

The reply above is generally correct - but if you're going to be working on a bicycle of any knid, you're going to need both.

I've got bicycle tools too. Tire levers, spoke, bottom bracket, headset, & Park dogbone wrenches.

I worked in that business once upon a time too!

I still have a custom touring bike built with Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing. It's got Phil Wood hubs, Weinmann concave rims, and lots of real great components. I haven't ridden it in almost 7 years!

Hi:Sandra

Regarding hand tools, buy SAE for around the house useage. I personally prefer the STANLEY brand but there are many others.

For almost everything else, you will also need METRIC tools.

Suggestion:
DO NOT BUY CHEAP TOOLS. Buy quality!
In the long run you will be miles ahead.

Regarding bicycles, <I haven't got the foggiest idea how that subject even got mentioned here...hahaha> buy any brand you want.

SAE is obsolete
Buy metric
Easy to say
In reality, you will end up using both.
Years and years will pass before we are finally on the Metric system..

Actually mango, that was my question before I registered. I'm still undecided... :)

Well Sandra,

If you are still undecided you must certainly have a lot of unfinished projects!

My advice is to buy both.
