I have a couple of wallpapered walled (lining paper) over which a couple of coats of paint had been applied in the past. Current problem is in two parts:
1. In some places very thin cracks have appeared.
2. In some places a small bit of wallpaper has been ripped (about a cm square).
I want to avoid re-papering the walls, so is it advisable to use plaster to cover the affected areas, sand down, and then paint over?

no i would not plaster, rather geta small container of vinal patching compound. this product is quiet creamy in texture. work it into the crack with a putty knife & smooth out with a small (cheap type) pait brush.you may dampen the brush for a smoother finish.
on the square shaped area ;fill & work from the middle out w/ the brush ; again damping the brush may give a smoother apearance. happy patching !
