I am installing crown molding around the top of kitchen cabinets that do not go all the way to the ceiling. What's the best way to secure the top edge of the molding. I was thinking of attaching some 1/2" plywood to the top of the cabinets with the outer edge cut at a 45 and nail the molding to it. Is there a better way ? Do I even need to worry about it ?

If you have a face frame kitchen you should be able to just nail it above the door. If not, then yes, add a veneered plywood above it and nail it to that.
