I need to recaulk around my standing shower stall. The old caulking is about 17 years old and has hardened up quite a bit. Short of using a sanding tool to grind or dig the old caulk out, how can I remove it? Is there a solvent I can use that will soften or dissolve the old stuff so I can put new in?

Marmy:

If you say that this stuff has "hardened up" then I presume it isn't silicone caulking we're talking about.

Go to the hardware store and buy a razor scraper in the paint department to cut out the biggest hunk of this caulking, and then use acetone to dissolve the rest.
