I'm a very inexperienced fixer-upper. I installed a toilet paper holder and missed the stud on one side. Now the screw is just falling out of the wall and isn't even strong enough to hold the spinning roll. Do I have to put it someplace else, patch the hole and repaint?

HI odds are you weren't going to hit both studs. Just go to your local home center and get a couple of hollow wall anchors (the kind that close tight to inside of the wall as you put the screw in). problem solved no painting or patching
