I'm putting down 16x16" porcelain tiles in our kitchen,....right now, the floor is 3/4" particle board. What is better to use in terms of adding to the thickness...? cement board, lathe and mud bed, OR, someone told me I could lay down some 5/8 exterior grade plywood and screw to the subfloor along with adhesive.???? Which method is more sturdy? I don't want to do a cheap job that will give me problems in a couple of years. Ive tiled a concrete floor before with no problems, but is my first time tiling a wood floor. The floor joists are in good shape, 2x8" on 16" centers. With no more than 9' spans

I hate to say it but the particle board should go. It is not a good surface to have under your tile. Any moisture will make it swell and blow the tile off the floor. I would tear out the particle board and replace it with 3/4" plywood, then a layer of 1/2" Durock set in thinset and screwed according to the manufacturer specs.
The moisture in the thinset can and probably will damage particle board.
