Our insurance company says we have to install peep holes on our new metal clad doors on rental property. Any tips on how to do this without making a mess of the metal. Our locksmith retired and we have to do it ourselves. I watched him several times and it was difficult for him.

Difficult?? NO!!

Most peep holes need a 1/2" or possibly a 5/8" hole to install them. Biggest problem you might encounter will be getting that size of a bit with a reduced shank to fit your 3/8" chuck, but even that's pretty easy.

Then just drill the hole. A steel clad door is just that -- CLAD. Has a thin layer of steel on both the interior and the exterior side, and most have a foam fill.

The trick is to keep the hole that you are drilling horizontal and square. You don't want it to angle up or down, or from side to side.

(But then, what do I know?? I've only done several hundred of them!!)
