my walls are drywalled with the knockdown technique. how do you prepare these walls for wallpaper?

Smooth the wall out with joint compound, seal with Zinnser's Gardz, prime with a prewallcovering primer.

Or hang a liner paper, and prep according to the paper you plan on hanging.

Annette-

Knockdown texture is a technique where drywall compound is sprayed onto the walls and the "blobs" are slightly smoothed (knocked down) with one pass with a wide drywall knife. It leaves a textured surface which hides imperfections and has more "interest" than a totally smooth wall. You can control the amount and size of the texture by controlling the settings on the sprayer. Some people can do it without a sprayer, but I've never mastered that method. :)

The need to level the walls with a skim coat of drywall compound will depend on the pattern of the wallpaper. If the wallpaper has a fairly distinctive pattern, you can skip the skim coat and the texturing pretty much "disappears".
