Ok, I am a new homeowner and have asked a zillion(well, not that many) questions here so that I can learn and either do myself or make sure that I am not getting the biz...................
Here is my question..............I want to replace the crank out windows in my living room............can some one please tell me how to properly measure this area so that when I go to purchase window replacements that I get the right size............I currently have 3 rows of windows 3 high that I want to replace with just 2 aluminum windows.............I have priced them at Lowes and Home Depot and that is what is in my budget........since I live in florida I dont really need storm windows just windows..........
Again, thanks for help:D

We've been through measuring many, many times. You need the replacement window to fit inside the hole that you will be leaving. Sometimes you will taking out the existing window, frame and all. Other times you will be removing just the glass and the mullion between the panes, leaving the exterior frame in place. Decide HOW you will be replacing the windows, and measure accordingly. Order the new windows about 1/2" narrower side to side than the opening, and about 1/4" shorter. The new window will sitt on the sill, leaving about 1/4" gap on the sides and the top. This is for expansion and contraction. Seal the exterior side, then the interior side.

the stores that you mentioned will come out and measure your windows for you, for about $25. If you are not familiar with installing windows i would suggest you have them do the measure. there are too many variables in preexhisting windows.
