I am interested in making some columns for a porch. I want them to be square. I know the ones in my area are veneered. What is a typical material for the actual column that is to be veneered? In other words, what goes inside the veneer?
Thanks

Use pressure-treated beams...4X4s, 6X6s, etc. to handle the actual load-bearing and screw or nail the outer layer to them.
Good Luck!

The pressure treated is definitely the way to go for the support, as Mike said. What you want after that depends on what sort of veneer finish, stucco, plaster, dry-vit, etc.
