I am going to replace my stat. I am not sure if my heat pump is a single stage or 2 stage. What is the Diff, and how can I tell?

Please, first, explain why you are replacing your tstat.2nd,most heat pumps are 2 stages. The 1st stage is your heat pump compressor. The second stage is electrical heat.If the comp. can't keep up the drop in room temp. tells the tstat to energize the electric heat (back up heat) to keep you comfortable.PLUS this second stage heat must be available when your outdoor unit goes into defrost to remove frost or ice build up on it.AT THIS POINT your outdoor unit is in the aircond mode.Without your backup heat you would be ACing your home....and last if your HP comp should fail your 2nd stage heat(backup heat) can be used to keep you warm.PDF
