Hi,
Last June I built a corner shelf as part of a 3 piece set of furniture. The second piece, a trunk, was stained and the top coat was applied last week. I used the same grade of pine, the same stain, and the same top coat. Here is my problem: the satin finish on the trunk I just finished is more shiny than the corner shelf. Any ideas on how to make the top coats match? What did I do wrong?

pmurphy,
Different woods absorb finish differently.
It's possible the satin finish wasn't stirred enough before applying. The flattening agent's (ground silica dust) sink to the bottom of the can and need to be stirred constantly to keep them suspended.
You can try some 0000 steel wool on the shiney piece.
Or you can apply another coat of satin.

When a finish is first applied it look glossy, but over time, it tends to flatten out. It could be, as said, you didn't sir it well enough the second time around, but my first guess is that you need to let the new piece sit as long as the other one has and see what happens.
