It's a Caloric, probably close to 20 years old. I just replaced the electric ignition coil, which stopped working. I was hoping the brand new coil would aleviate the problem I'm having when the gas ignites. Last night (for the first time) both the broiler and the oven door blew open when the gas was ignited, throwing 4 inches of flame out (I had the kitchen lights out, and as 'neat' as it was to look at, I'm very concerned).
I tried adjusting the gas valve in, hoping maybe too much gas was causing the explosion.
Any suggestions?

Hello TG and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliances topic.
The problem is called delayed ignition. Very serious as well as dangerous. Check to ensure the new ignitor is properly placed on or near the burner. Must be in the exact same place or location on or near the burner as the prior one was.
The ignitor should be removed next. Carefully. Ignitors are fragile. Once the ignitor is removed, remove the burner and clean all the holes or slots. The holes or slots are called ports.
To clean them may require a thin blade or wire depending on the type of ports the burner has. Pay special attention to the ports near the ignitor. Those are where the gas exists first to provide positive first ignition.
Once all this is done, reinstall the burner and attach the hot surface ignitor exactly as it currently is. Problem now should be solved....:)
If the burner is aluminium, chances are the ignition port is a slot. If so and the slot is restricted too much or the burner is in poor condition, it should be replaced.
If the ignition source is only on one side or on top of the burner, there needs to be a path for the flames to ignite and or crossover to the opposite side of the burner. The ignition and crossover holes or slot provide that path.
Any substance blocking or restricting the slots and or ports on the burner, will cause the problem you described. To insure proper burner ignition and operation, cleaning these slots and ports is required.
Natural gas contains trace chemicals, which may leave behind residues, in the form of a white powdery substance. Cleaning the burner of this residue, etc. restores proper burner operation.
Burners made of aluminum may warp from the heat generated. Warping requires burner replacement if the ignition ports and or slots, depending upon which type the burner has, cannot be cleared.
The current task now is to check the above possible and or potential problems and make the required corrections. In many circumstances no parts are required. Simply a matter of clearing the restrictions to allow the flow of gas to come into contact with the ignition source.
Retail parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts and are listed in the phone book.
Additional Suggestion:
Read the manufacturers web site for product information, problem possibilities, problem causes, problem solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly, repair procedures, instructions, pictorials, schematics, all or part of which may be available online.
