I have several questions so any answer to all will be appreciated. I am preparing to install slate tile in my downstairs kitchen, dinning area and bathroom. All will be on the cement slab.
One thing I found while ripping out the old ceramic tile is a brown paper underlayment that when partially ripped up exposses a black middle or bottom. Is this a moisture barrier used when the house was built in 1990? If so would it be safe to say I need to lay another one down?
Also, there is some mortar from the old tile still on the cement in areas. It is a few millimeters thick and I was told because I'm installing slate that it would be OK but then I also heard that I should rent a sander and get it all off. Should I get the sander or will I be OK?
Lastly, there are some holes in the cement and some grooves made from the chipper hammer used to take up the old tile. Can those holes be filled with mortar as I lay the new tile or should I fill them with something else before I start?
Thank You!
