I am preparing to install slate tiles on the walls of my bathroom. The walls are painted. Do I need to do any special prep to the walls??

Hey welcome to the diy forums. Looks like you might have gotten overlooked, sorry for the delayed response.

You Post title indicated this was greenboard, if this is in a shower or other wet area, I'd highly advise on removing the sheetrock & installing cbu as a substrate for your tile. Others may disagree, but I don't like call-backs & would rather do the job the best possible way the first time.

Tile over sheetrock in dry areas, is ok as long as it isn't a glossy paint, then you may have a bonding problem between your thinset & the painted wall. You can scuff up the paint with sandpaper to get a better bond, which is critical for a quality tile job. Good luck! ;)
