I am still not clear on if adding a heat supply duct to my family room will have an effect. There are 2 returns in there and the room is always cold. I can easily add a supply off the main trunk- The room already has a ceiling fan. I found a piece of flex duct which will reach- SHould I use that or keep looking for the hard 6" round piece to go in there......??? Help!!

Get the steel pipe for the runs and put 2 in there by the outside walls. Dont use flex;) ED

Why 2???
I don't know that I can get to outside walls- but I will try- I can get to inside wall. You say steel pipe- Is that something different from sheet metal?

Sorry about that .Yes I mean just the old sheet metal pipe you can put the floor registers about 12 " in from the outside walls there in the floor. Ask for 6" takeoffs and 6" 90o boots 2 1/4"X 12" and 6" pipe. like to get the hot air so it has to come across the room to the cold air returns ;) ED

Yes there is a big difference.. the flex causes too much static pressure. think of air going over smooth surface and then going over a rough surface ... which would move better ??? im a sheet metal mechanic for over 30 years... trust me...
