Hi - A couple of times recently, my drill just spins like the gears are stripped. I just pound on the chuck to get it back in and fixews the problem for a while, although it seems like the chuck is still out further from when it was new. Does anyone know how these chucks (keyless) are put together, or have any advice on how to correct this problem?

Thanks

There is screw down inside the chuck. It also screws onto the drill. I think it is a lefthand thread.

when you say "spin" what do you mean?

Thanks. How do you screw it back on? Somehow the motor would have to be held tight.

What I meant by spin is that that I have it set for the highest torque setting and I can easily hold the chuck from spinning with the drill on it's highest speed.

If you can hold the chuck and the drill is still turning full throttle sound like you gotta a problem on the inside. The left hand screw doesnt have to be gut wrenching tight. The chuck itself is a righthand thread so unless its unscrewing itself , then you have a problem on the with the spindle or a gear. The way i understand this.

I would first take the chuck assembly off. Unscrew the screw in the chuck. Depending on the brand it will be a allen or a torx wrench. Maybe (but not very often) a straight or phillips. Be sure to turn it clockwise to loosen. Then open the chuck all the way and stick an allen wrench that will fit in the chuck (something i learned from Greg H.!!!!) and gently give it a couple of good whacks counterclock wise. Hopefully you might be able to hand looosen it.
