I have a oil fired forced air furnance, it worked fine last year. This year it will not ignite on its own, if you manually light it, it works like its suppose to, cycles untill the desired temp is reached but will not ignite when the temp falls, it cycles but doen't ignite just trips the reset

How are you manually lighting an oil furnace?

What reset is it tripping?

It pumps oil into the fire box but doesn't ignite so I drop a lite paper towel into it

Sounds like your igniter is not working for you.. Is the transfer putting out spark at the end of the burner? Rods lined up?

When was the last time you had a full service clean up? Should be done every year.

This could be very dangerous... You need a pro to check it out. Sounds like transformer could be out.

I know of a pending class action lawsuit involving alleged defective hot surface ignitors used in furnaces.
