I was hoping to get some advice on skim coating methods and products, from someone who knows how to do it.

In the process of taking down wallpaper some of the face of the wallboard paper has been scuffed or torn. I want to paint these walls so I would like to get them as smooth as possible.

Is the skim coat process any different than putting mud over hole patches?

What product should I use (currently have SheetRock multipurpose premix)?

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you've got all the brown paper off from the wallpaper, if not I'd suggest using an oil based primer over it prior to any finish paint.

If you want a real flat wall skimming the entire wall with the compoound you've got and a 12" drywall knife will do the trick. Just don't try to build up any areas with too thick of a coat, this will lead to cracks. Good mud work is just coats & patience. Got to put it on in thin coats & allow it to dry thoroughly, then use a drywall blade to knock off any big globs & sanding as necessary between coats. Have fun!
