I just pulled the carpeting from my dining room in order to install hardwood flooring. I plan on finishing my basement, which is known to be damp at times. basement "room" to be carpeted is directly below the dining room, so the area is actually a little smaller than the carpeting (in other words, the carpeting will fit wall to wall after I frame and will then need to be trimmed).
Carpet is only 3.5 years old, was installed by the builder. It is your basic plush carpet that many builders use. I tossed the padding, but was hoping to be able to use the carpet.
I figured there would be a special type of padding to use on the concrete floor. Not sure how to proceed, whether to glue carpet/padding, nail down (or glue) tackless strips. Maybe I would be better off tossing the carpet, and buying a berber or special low-pile carpet that would be good for a concrete basement floor with ocassional dampness. That is why I am posting on this site b/c I haven't a clue!
Thanks!
Dave
PS why do they call them "tackless strips" - I cut my hand a few times on the "tacks" when removing them
