I have seen these keyless entry devices at big orange. How well do they work and are they safe?

Those made by reputable companies should be as safe as regular locks and more convenient. Codes should be changed occasionally to prevent noticeable wear on the keypads, if equipped.

Do you recall the name? Perhaps one of the locksmiths here may have had some personal experience with that brand.

I looked into them at one time, I think it was Titan that I was looking at, but they are somewhat pricey at $90 a pop.

Not real sure how well they work or what (if any) kind of encryption is used on the transmissions. For that kind of dough, I could just integrate a lock into a security system :D
