The railing in my house is a medium oak color and I'd like to change it to match the color of the wood on my furniture, mahogany. Is it easier (time-wise) to replace the railing or can it be stained? If the railing can be stained, what do I need to do this, besides the stain?
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

You may be able to stain it to be close to the mahogany, but oak won't be mahogany. The first step is to strip the old finish and stain, then stain the new color, and finish it. This will be much cheaper than replacing it with mahogany.
Hope this helps.
