I'm having new carpeting put in on the stairs to the second floor. I pulled the old carpet and found double padding on the stairs. The installers told me that with todays better padding, they don't doule pad because it would be to much and it would wrinkle. Is this true? The old carpeting was laid about 18 years ago with the padding that had kind of a buble pattern, not flat like the new stuff.

I'm wondering why they doubled the pad 18 years ago?
More cushion in a traffic area like a staircase will lead to delamination of the backings.
Was the old carpet on your stairs wrinkled?
