I have recently moved into a new house with a gas log fireplace with a blower on it. my question concerns the efficiency of the fireplace compared to the furnace. While the fp keeps the living room and dining/kitchen very warm and cozy, I wonder if it is more effecient to turn the furnace up a couple of degrees. Right now I'm not really concerned about the bedrooms being warmed because I like it cooler at night any way.

The furnace wins hands down based on efficiency. Your best bet would be to use the furnace and only partially close off the registers in the unused bedrooms.

The fireplace, even with a heater box and fan wastes lots of gas. Looks nice and heats the area but not very efficently based on cost per therm.

The furnace may heat the whole house but in the long run do so for less money even heating the unused rooms.

You may also want to use a setback thermostat for nights to further reduce costs or just lower the night time temp.
