I have oil heat and baseboard heating, when the burner first fires, i get a banging noise in my pipes. I traced the noise to a section of wall in a dormer that was cut to put the pipe through. Any ideas how to stop it?

Hi:alane

I do not profess to be a service agent for you type of heating system. Therefore, I can only offer common sense suggestions.

Try securing the pipe to the beams.
Could be air in the lines???
The downstream heater nearest that line may have a defective or partially closed intake valve.

Hopefully someone experienced with this type of heating system will be able to offer you more advice.

Good Luck,

Difficult to diagnose without looking at the situation but what it sounds like to me, your experiencing pipe expansion noise. This is caused by the pipe installed too tightly agaist the house framing. When the pipe starts to heat up, it expandes and causes a banging sound. If this the case, you'll have to open up the wall and change the piping soo it's not touching the house framing, if that's at all possible.
