Hi- TechShield is being offerred as an optional upgrade ($700) in my new house. It is a radiant barrier and promises more efficient cooling.

Is anyone in the know with these products? Do they make a significant change in utility costs?

Thanks

Hi:Jules

If you could explain in more detail what this product is and where it gets installed, it would be helpful to all of us.

I suspect it's an insulation in the attic. Most likely installed, up above, in the beams under the roof.

Whatever it is, get the claims of energy savings in writting.

Good Luck,
TomBartco

Radiant barriers are highly recommended by the talk show people in Houston. They claim a significant reduction in heat load, due to the reflection of heat energy from the interior surface of the roof. A friend of mine said he measured an actual 40 deg. F reduction in attic temperature after installing a radiant barrier, with a noticable reduction in his airconditioning cost. However, your results will vary, depending on where you live, the type of roof (how reflective it is), trees shading the roof, etc. Fyi, very positive results are also being reported on the use of a new radiant barrier paint which is sprayed on the underside of the roof. It is sold by Sherwin Williams, and you might compare the cost of having it sprayed on vs using the TechShield. And I agree with Tom; get the claims in writing whichever way you go!

It's called "Radiance"...the name of the paint that Sherwin Williams sells in Texas. I checked into it last year and it runs about $33.00/gal. They also have a website and will send brochures and info. Comes in colors, can be used on interior walls and ceilings and in the attic space on underneath side of roof. When I called last year to get opinions on the product from the talk show host, building contractor, Tom Tynun?, he knew nothing about it. Now that it has been "discovered" locally, he highly recommends it. It is evidently a product used by NASA as a radiant heat barrier on shuttles, etc. Can be painted on or sprayed on. A "do it yourself" poject, if you want, but I have noticed lots of companies offering the service now.
