Mini lathes are only used for tiny things. I have a Jet Jwl-1236 and I like it.
It has 34.5" centers and you can turn the head outward for bigger bowls, etc. You can do upto about a 11" diameter piece within the centers. You would need to cut off your corners first, or you'd have a bit of a problem making it go around in circles.
I would say that the mini lathes are good for things like pen making and such. I've made well over 100 pens on the lathe I have. People love them. It now only takes me about 20 mins of turning, sanding and finishing time to do one.

I'm getting one for the wife she likes to make miniature furniture for doll houses, that why I asked about a mini lathe.
