I'm in need of a new gas forced air furnace but have found it to be a very closed industry. All of the local HVAC companies I have spoke with are more than glad to sell me a furnace but I don't wanna pay someone a thousand dollar markup just to have them go across town to a distributor and pick one up and drop it off at my house. I even have a friend who has been a general contractor and local construction official and can't get a furnace for me - the distributor won't even sell to him! I understand people need to make money but it seems as if they are trying to keep people like me from installing their own furnaces and not paying the HVAC people for markups and labor. Can anyone give me any advise on where I can turn to by a name brand furnace at a reasonable price/markup.

Try Home Depot... they will sell you a piece of crap furnace...Why should an HVAC man that earns his living on the sales and service not mark up a furnace to you?! if something goes wrong with it I would bet you would be right on his door step cring the blues and ready to sue... Do you think your Insurance Company is going to pay you if you install the gas heater and something happens and burns down your house? Call them and ask them....Bet you wont like what they say!

It depends what state you live in.
Most distributors are loyal to there contractors and should be.
Why would you want to put your family at jeopardy and install a time bomb. It's not as easy as you think. Let someone else carry the liability that knows what they're doing.
If you know what your doing than you would know the ins & outs of the trade.
Stick with the top manufactures.. Carrier...Trane...Or there sub groups.

The National HVAC safety code is being tightened and making it almost impossible for an individual to do his own work and installation. Sears used to sell a complete line of systems, but was forced to discontinue selling to the public. If you are doing an installation that requires a permit, you may find getting your job inspected harder than finding the system in the first place. However, suggest you go to the following web site and see if he can help you: http://www.furnaceparts.com/
