I'm currrently in the process of remodeling a bathroom. While removing the base trim tiles that are attached to the bottom of the wall some of the wallboard surface paper is ripping off.
My question is can I just smooth some mud on to seal and level the damaged areas, (there will be base tiles or base boards reinstalled) or do I need to cut out the damaged sections and replace the wall board?
Note: It's a half bath no tub or shower.
Thanks for the input.

Just skim them over with drywall mud.
