I have a handrail in my house that is warped. The house was built in 1927 and the hand rail is original to the house. I guess 77 years of use caused the issue. The arm rail was mounted to and supported by the wall at each end but not in the middle so it sagged. It is about 6 ft in length and made from maple in cross section it is the thickness and shape of a typical handrail. I have taken it off the wall and plan to refinish it but I need to eliminate the sag. Is this possible?

What you might do when you re-install it is to mount a support where it would straighten the rail. This would allow you to move the support up a bit at a time to eventually straighten the rail. A six foot section should permit a fair amount of correction upon installation. It may be that it will allow only small amounts of straightening per year, but it did not get this way overnight.

Hope this helps.
