hey people- My upstairs rooms for my children each have their own rooms and doors to close--- My daughters' door, years ago kept closing, and after full investigation we had to put on one of those spring loaded hinges on the bottom hinge so now the door swings OPEN instead of closed. Well here it is 14 years later and ALL OF A SUDDEN my sons door is starting to CLOSE on its OWN!!!. Is there something I can troubleshoot first before buying the spring loaded hinge that might correct this problem???? What do I look for and how do I try to fix it first. Please advise.

If you want a door to stay in one place, a little trick you can use is take a hinge pin out and thwack it with a hammer (bend it a little). When you put it back in the friction will be enough to keep the door from closing...

commmooooon....I get points for that one don't I??? :D

When my oldest daughter was in her teens, her door kept closing too............but she was trying to act like she didn't know us. :)

Seriously, doors swing open or closed because they are slightly out of plumb. You can fix them by re-plumbing the door (and they'll probably move again after the house expands/contracts or settles some more.

Webrebel has an excellent suggestion (and a personal favorite). If you try this, be careful. If you bend the hinge pin too much it probably wont go back in the hinge - and it might be too tight if you do get in in. This is a "try and fit" approach. You want just enough bend to keep the door from swinging. If you can see the bend, you probably overdid it. :)
