I have two square holes on either side of my basement. They are on the floor up against the foundation walls.

Each is about 20" long X 16"wide and about 1 foot deep.

They are located on opposite walls directly accross from each other. If I put my hand into it the hole appears to continue almost like a tunnel under the basement floor slab. I don't know how far it goes.

They are covered with a removable wood panel.

What are they? Can I cover them up?

Is this some type of drainage system? The house is about 90 years old.

Probably old ductwork.

Yes, it is an old type of drainage system. Have not seen one in years. They probably lead to an underground cisterin. I would just cover them up and let them be. Good Luck.
