I have a loose staircase banister, how can I tighten it?

Thanks,
Shannon&Yolanda

Is the bannister lose at the wall or newell post or is a baluster loose at the stair?

It's loose at the newell at the bottom of the stairs.

Is there some trim under the banniser that might house a bracket that holds the bannister to the newell post?

No there's no bracket visible.

Then the bannister must be set into the newell post as a mortise and tenon joint.

Describe how it is loose. Does it slide back and forth, rattle side to side, twist around. When this evidence of loosness is present, what happens with the balusters?

The newel post moves from side to side, at the top. The base remains in place and the balusters move with the hand rail. I've attached a picture of a similar staircase.

I appreciate your assistance,
Shannon

Thanks for bearing with me on all the questions.

If the newell post is moving at the top as you describe, it must be loose at the bottom. The bottom may not appear to move, but something has to be loose. I would take a look at how the newell post is attached and see about tightening it. I can imagine that some give the post a grab when coming down or going up the stairs.

Hope this helps.
