I have a seven year old forced air furnace that works great most of the time...

The thermostat tells the furnace we need heat and the furnace says OK.

The ignitor comes on and gas ignites but the burners will not light.

The system will cycle in that mode until Divine intervention occurs and keeps us from freezing.

Is it the thermocouple?

Help! It's about 10F out!

Thanks,
Dosmos

Hello Dosmos. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic & our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

You did not mention what occurs when Divine intervention steps in. Doing so would greatly narrow down the list of possibilities. In that fashion, it would make the diagnostics procedure much quicker and easier, leading to heat much sooner also.

Four possibilities come to mind. A weak hot surface ignitor, dirty or defective flame senser and or a defective solenoid in the gas control valve or a safety device is shuting down the burners or keeping them from turning on.

Knowing what Divine intervention means would help greatly. Kindly use the reply button to add that info in more detail. Be glad to help you further.

Retail parts dealers and heating part supplers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts and are listed in the phone book.

An excellent source for original replacement parts is your local retail appliance parts store, the local heating dealers and agents retail part stores. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. The info will help to determine the possible problem causes.
