Doors and Windows - single pane window options

I currently have several broken window panes that I need to replace. I am fairly handy with woodwokring and was hoping to upgrade my nice 80 year old wooden sinlge pane windows to something better (like from 3/32nd glass to maybe 1/8th tempered low-E glass to help with sound and insulation.) Has anyone ever done such an upgrade and if so do you have any comments, tips, techniques or informational websites you used? Thanks.

Personally, I think if you replace a single pane with another single pane of whatever thickness, the difference in e value would be negligible.

Webrebel is right. Staying with a single pane of glass, even if you could get it with a low-E coating, will do virtually nothing for either energy efficiency or noise reduction.

And tempered?? That's going to do a thing for you except drain your checkbook!! You would put as much into just the glass that you are talking about as a decent vinyl replacement window, with dual panes and low-E glass would cost you! THAT would give you the energy efficiencey and the noise reduction that you are seeking.

If the rabbet is deep enough to accept 3/8" insulating glass that's the only thing that would be better than single glass. With low-e you would need 7/16". Remember that your 80 year old windows must have some heat loss around the frames.
