I am going to drill three 2-1/2" deep holes (1/2" or larger) on concrete slab, can I use Cold Chisel rather than hammer drill?

Theoretically? Maybe. Realistically, rent a rotary hammer drill if you do not want to buy one.

I agree with renting a hammer drill. I don't know the reason for the holes, but there is no way you will have anything close to a 1/2" diameter hole. The opening will be double that if you are lucky plus the concrete will be badly spalled around the hole you make.

Thanks for the inputs.
I only need to drill few holes to epoxy 1/2" bolts for deck posts on concrete slab or 1/2" rebar for vinyl handrails on concrete stoop. I believe hole size is not very important for epoxy. Bought a cheap $50 hammer drill and a Bosch drill bit from HD, did not work. HD wasn't too happy when I returned them.
Will buy a 1" SDS hammer drill from ebay (cheaper than rent, and much more convenient) and try it. Cold chisel will be my last resort.
