I currently live in Buffalo, NY, in a 1300 sq ft ranch home. I heat with hot water baseboard heating. What are my options for installing air condintioning. Do I need to have the traditional duct work installed or are there other ways? Thanks Kevin

a/c must have forced air...yes you need a duct system

mini-splits system is a A/C or Heat Pump system that has a remote outdoor unit, and the indoor unit hangs on the wall, and it cools a pretty large area. Some unit you can add up to 3 wall units to one out door unit.

They are VERY quiet indoors, and don't need to listen to the loud window shaker's compressor.

They can be pretty expsensive up front, but in the long run it's worth it.

My aunt and uncle just installed one in thier home, and are very happy with it. They didn't have to rip a hole in the ceiling for duct work since they already have hot water heat.

If you have some room in the attic for duct work go that way for sure. I find that the jet pac and the mini splits dont do as good a job as a good duct job with registers on it. Also there is more noise in the room where they are.;) ED
