Hey yall i hope im in the right place. I am a tool repair freak but i gotta a problem. I was wondering if there was a trick into removing a drill chuck from a portable drill. i have taken out the retaining screw (left hand thread by the way) but the chuck itself is very stubborn and it s kinda hard to take out the chuck with whole thing turning on me. Is there a trick to keeping the whole spindle from turning without tearing up the machine?? Thanks in advance!!

If the screw is removed you can put a larger L shaped allen wrench in the chuck and then give the end a quick rap with a hammer to jar the thread loose.
It's probably a left hand thread and don't go overboard with the force of the hit.

Rapping the allen key should work. Just make sure the end screw is out.
It could be a RH thread so take a hammer and strike a hard fast blow on the end of the wrench in the removal direction of a RH thread and it should go.

I put a keyless chuck on my old Makita cordless about a dozen years ago. After a few "raps" with a mallet failed to to loosen the chuck, I put the chuck key into the chuck, held a block of wood on that, and hit hard with a hammer while someone else held the drill. That did it.

Am i stupid or what? I was hitting it the wrong way!! I dont know why i thought it was LH thread!! I ve taken power tools apart and put em back together like nothing and i couldnt do this simple project quickly. Allen wrench worked like a charm, i put it in and gave it a couple of good whacks with a shop hammer and it spun off to the floor. i grabbed another drill and tried the chuck key method and same result ...........came off with out a hitch!!! I appreciate your help guys.....this forum rocks!! Another problem solved at doityourself!!!!!!!
