I'm remolding my bathroom and need some advice on matching up my new drywall to the old plaster.... the plaster thickness is anywhere from 3/4 to 7/8 thick...my drywall will be 5/8....should I fur out the stud where the plaster and the drywall meet or can I make up the difference with compound....any tips would be appreciated...Thanks

I would fur out the stud to within 1/16" of the top of the plaster and then fill the 1/16" with sheetrock compound and tape. Apply tape to the plaster & drywall joint just like any other butt joint and then apply 2 to 3 layers of compound.

Use the furring, you're gonna want the drywall to be as close to flush ae possible with the old plaster. Plaster to drywall seem is one place I'd use mesh tape.

Hey I have a question related to this thread.
I have a 90 degree corner in master bedroom one wall has newly installed 1/2" drywall other wall is lath and plaster there is approx. a 1 to 2" gap in the corner. What is the best method for mudding this? will mesh tape adhere to the painted lath and plaster? how do i keep the corner square i dont want to build up too much mud on the plaster side.

Fill in the gap with mud. Let dry. Put tape over the filled in gap area. put a piece of corner bead on the corner. Finish the corner bead with 2 fill coats and 1 top coat of mud.

using one of those inside corner metal beads with the paper edge?
Also will the drywall mud stick to the painted surface on the plaster?

Sorry, I was thinking outside corner. For inside corner-fill gap with mud, let dry. Put a lot of mud on either side of corner. put paper tape in the corner, mash down. either put more paper tape or mesh tape over the rest of the gap. Finish the corner with mud. As far as it sticking to paint, it will but... if you have flat paint no worries, if you have egg shell or higher sheen then scuff up the paint with sand paper.

Yep inside corner. Did this last night and seemed to work OK. It is an eggshell finish and adheres fine. only thing i was worried about was getting a good flat corner but I think it wont look too bad, lath and plaster is not perfect, so it will never look as good as drywall.
